Deptford does art

"Deptford does Art" is a community based initiative run by Zuzana Tatanka. The premise is to bring local artists to local venues, but not necessarily galleries. Art from the people to the people: pubs, cinema and gardens are the target venues.

I very much support this idea, because of the ecological nature of my artwork: if I feed off reality and am inspired by the political, my artwork should be rendered in reality, by the public at large and not just one elitist sector of the public.

Because this show was the anniversary, the curator asked the artists to bring either the pieces that were most representative of their work, or the most recent work. My practice was going through a total reformulation, so I opted by the first option, as I hadn't yet produced "new" work. Very spontaneously, and unexpectedly, she asked me to introduce the video piece to the public, which put me on the spotlight.

SKILLS:

- tailor artist statement for the audience (less art-speak)

- install the work in liaison with the curator

- impromptu public speaking
